Where I Am Now (in the 60’s with Mad Men and Jon Hamm)

Posted in Computer, Daily Life Fiftysomething, bichon, computers on August 16th, 2010 by TC – Be the first to comment

I should be working on double checking web pages (I tend to lose interest when it’s not actually a deadline or anything) or I should be working on a classified ad site we are starting up (excitement is in the air, I feel like Craig on Craigs list or @ least igs since my cousin has done the hard work so far).   I looked @ the translations and decided that I hoped all the people who use the site speak English because I’m not to sure about php and other languages and wordpress and all that fun stuff.

I have worked a bit on my other blogs, mostly Florence View, we’ve had a refrigerator go out and resurrect and then an ac fan go out, windshield crack, trailer quit, locked out of a motel room, and the dog got dirty which went on my Animals Blog.

So that is how you make a completely link filled paragraph, wasn’t that simple?  OK, it’s not complete but it’s close.

So where have I really been besides facebook?episode-5-don-cooper

I got to watch episode 4 of Mad Men.  You know the show to end all shows?  I am a little younger than Sally in the show and I find it endlessly fascinating.  Jon Hamm finds me fascinating too.  OK, he’s my friend on facebook and I think it’s the real one, since I have my eye for my portrait picture maybe he likes my eye?    Anyway episode 4 was on twice last night and that was the FIRST episode I’d gotten to watch live.   I’ve got AMC @ home but just got it and haven’t had a chance to be home for the sacred hour.  Now I have been partially satiated.   To further the effect of the 60s last night I can go to their discussion. I have been there some but I need to go back REALLY badly so au revoir, sayanora, adios….buenos noches…….

And BTW does ANYONE understand Rubicon?  I’m going to have to look it up……….

iBook Utilities And Why I Need An iPad

Posted in Computer, Pegysus Web Design, Uncategorized, apple, computers on June 24th, 2010 by TC – 1 Comment

220px-IBook_redjarI have an old iBook, not quite as old as this one.

200px-IBook_G4It looks like this. We call this unbreakable husbands computer, he’s been home quite a bit lately so I’ve been using his laptop off and on. So now that I have to actually use it it’s time to like actually WORK on the thing and speed it up a bit. I’ve installed Virtual PC and different OS on Macs years ago so I”m not a complete stooge as far as mac goes and unix, I do love the look of the old iBook, it’s sort of like an old two tone corvette.

Anyway right now I’m verifying file permissions with the Disk Utility and repairing. I also downloaded MacJanitor and Onyx for my appropriate version of os 10. So if your mac is a bit sluggish start here and THEN buy more RAM which will be my next step. (unless I go to the iPad which is absolutely imperative that I get high on my wish list, that or a mini mac or both?)

Oh BTW (shameless plug) I work for a web design company freelancing, writing, researching, some designing, we have a new website, feel FREE to check it out….

How I Know I’m a Genius

Posted in Computer, Daily Life Fiftysomething, computers on June 20th, 2010 by TC – Be the first to comment

DSC02306Because only a genius could have dsl for 3 months, think it’s a tad slow but just be so glad to have something a bit faster than satellite that she doesn’t care.  Then husband hooks up mac ibook of his yesterday (yes you read correctly, he does have his own laptop, can hook it up, and I let him use the ibook, actually less chance of him getting a virus or screwing something up) and ibook gets blazing fast speeds.  I’m supposed to be getting 12M dsl which I presume to mean megabytes a second?  I’m getting almost 8 on the ibook this morning.  I’ve been getting almost 1 on the windows box, cutting edge hp 5 years old with windows xp (well it was cutting edge 5 years ago!)….  So I’m thinking the wireless adapter on the windows box is limiting the bandwidth.  BINGO!!!  For laymen OLD networking stuff is BAD (this is what comes of hooking up wireless without hooking up ethernet @ all because I CAN!!).  So I use the actual ethernet cord that came with the modem, hook it up stringing it carefully through the slot on the back of the computer desk, and I’m getting blazing speeds (well 1.5 to 6M) with the windoze box.   Problem is the cord is too short and to go all through the house the modem has to be up high so the laptops will work in our bedroom, not that I use it much there but I CAN!!!

So I dig an old ethernet cable out from behind the computer desk, I”m telling the truth here people do NOT make fun,  I haven’t messed with ethernet for a year or so (try 3 or 4)  but this desk has sat in this spot for 4 years…anyway the modem is on the shelf above the computer since the cord (that is still hooked to it temporarily)  is too short for it to go on top of the desk and I just sat it there about head level on the shelf while I tested the cord, the computer box  is down in it’s little enclosed space down below so I have to pull it out……THE CORD IS STILL HOOKED UP and is being pulled through that little slot in the back of the desk….!!!! Crash bang boom the world goes black, I didn’t hit the floor but the modem hit the top of my head.  I’m not bleeding but I’ve got some seriously thick hair.  The great part is I wait till my husband is gone to do all of this!!  He didn’t witness it but he wasn’t here to tell me NOT to do what I did or take care  of me….  It might be a good thing he wasn’t here to see it…

Modem still works, my speed is good….head hurts a bit…

Happy Fathers Day to All fathers today!!!!

Brother MFC 420CN Printer Help!!

Posted in Computer, Printers, computers on June 1st, 2010 by TC – Be the first to comment

Brother MFC 420CN MULTIFUNCTION PRINTER

Unable to Clean Please see troubleshooting and maintenance in your user manual.  If you turn it off and on it tries to clean itself and makes a HORRIBLE noise, sort of like gears grinding.

My printer gave me this message for a month or so and I finally got around to doing something about it….

The manual is found here, it was no help.  Of course I couldn’t find the paper manual in the closet.  This is the SECOND printer I’ve had like this, it’s fairly cheap to use and dependable.  Well dependable until it says unable to clean and starts making the weird noises?  This would be when the other one quit.  I had two because we were living in a camper part time.

ANYWAY this solved the problem with the Brother MFC 420cn, use @ your own risk.  Through personal experience if you goof toward the end just turn it off and it will all be fine…@ least mine was….

This has worked with a MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C/240C and FAX2440C model.

To reset purge counter

  1. Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC240C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).
  2. Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine’s log information list (function code 80).
  3. Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.  (it says purge)
  4. Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.
  5. Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
  6. Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

There you have it, hope it helped.  Also both of these printers goofed after being left inactive with the power turned off to them.  Moral of the story?  plug the printer in to a surge protector you leave ON if you won’t be using it for a month or so …

This is also on a permanent page entitled computer and Printer Help.  I claim no special knowledge and accept no liability, use at your own risk.  But you can google it and see where it’s worked before….

1394, wireless, dsl, not connected but I’m here?

Posted in Computer on February 8th, 2010 by TC – 1 Comment

OK, I’m getting dsl from my cousins wireless connection right?  I’m on xp on a desktop and using a wireless adapter hung by the back door on a nail in line with her router.  (highly sophisticated systems we run here don’t you worry)  Her house is probably not 300 yards away.   I also had to cut cedar tree branches that were hanging down and in the way but not it works when it rains or the wind blows…. LOLold house

Phone tech guy that ho0ked up the dsl said we couldn’t do it get the dsl wireless router to go to my house up the hill.  My house was too far away. ( Linksys wireless b 2.4 adapter $16 on ebay works like a charm, she had my satellite down there previously but she paid for it, long story)  HERE is the rub.  It meaning my wireless little tv screen in the system tray has a red x on it.  NOT CONNECTED right.  But here I am.  It says not connected @ the top of the wireless network box like where you check for wireless networks, then IN the box it says network requires a key and you are connected and the button @ the bottom says disconnect?!!  The 1394 connection is connected, I used to used my laptop as a wireless access point which may be why it’s connected?

So what’s the deal?  It works and works, if I don’t do anything for awhile it disconnects, then it shows automatic, and a weak signal and connect, I go change the wep number, well I really don’t change it just paste it again and voila…….

I can teach my husband how to reconnect etc. but I would really like to know why I’m not connected and have no status… I feel like a non person……if I don’t comment on your blog I’m not here….firefox just crashed 2 times, this could get interesting….

I like those….did ya notice?

BUT my mouse is working like a charm, watch and I will hit publish….

Nokia E 71x And A Mac i-book, how do I tether them for internet?

Posted in Computer on January 27th, 2010 by TC – 4 Comments

I know how to tether them silly, with usb, it’s the connecting to the internet I’m having problems with.

The reason is here. The reason is  also I ‘ve had the black screen 2 times and weird things are highligted on this page.  I know the demons that posess this laptop are getting stronger.

Seriously the mac is an i book, has os X on it.  This will be gibberish for anyone who hasn’t tried something like this.  I got to the part where it used the phone  to dial up the internet, it connect, tries to authorize, disconnnects.

I did call at&t with this.  The guy told me to use the isp name .com somewhere.   I haven’t tried since then. (I know how to network on a mac but haven’t had nearly the experience on one that I have a windows box. On windows you use a program from at&t to connect to the internet) He admitted it could be done.  At&t doesn’t offer support for  mac.  I asked him if I figured it out should I call back so they could tell other people how to do it.  He said At&t doesn’t support this phone with mac and will not since the phone is a whole 6 MONTHS old and I’m sure is like obsolete.

I belong to a couple geek boards but didn’t find anything there and decided I might find out something by asking here,  nicely.  I really am curious, I’m so close and yet so far.

Sorry for the complete seriousness of this post, we’ve had like 5 blackouts, it changed to another page, make that 6 blackouts……tried to publish this half way though.

Wal Mart Employees Kill Customer?

Not exactly what the headline promises but close enough to go—- huh?  Comments below  the article are interesting too.

And one of my favorite computer links Major Geeks.    I used to go there all the time, it’s helped me so much, for some the lingo may be over your heads but you are on the internet, you will understand if you try.  For problems and software it can’t be beat.  I see one of the topic categories is trucks, cars, motorcycles and toys so it’s sort of male oriented but that’s fine, they have quite a few of the answers I need.  There’s also a huge list of downloadable software  with suggestions.  If you aren’t geeky @ all this won’t thrill you but I’d gotten away from the fine tuning of computers for a few years and I’m so rusty it’s a relief to find people to help me!  Also my laptop screen goes black while I’m typing.  Emachine, 5000, only happens for like 3 seconds and it’s back on and ONLY when I am typing in a browser window like now?

Also husband isn’t laid off or sort of, he’s supposed to go back Monday?  Too late and have too much to do to car to go home till then so we are here in TX, in a camper, (granted it’s a big nice one but it’s still a camper) in the rain and we only have 2 more new movies to watch.  I’ve already asked him if he intended to talk to me the whole time he was home when I was trying to WORK on the computer this morning, (can we say slightly snippy or just b!^@$? ), then this evening I told him if anyone bothered him like he bothered the dog they would be dead meat in a matter of minutes.  He was waiting till the dog went to sleep and then throwing a pillow @ him.  Dog would then lift his head, glare @ husband and then go immediately back to sleep.

Husband also quit smoking and I almost did.  3 a day, if you didn’t know I smoked SURPRISE I didn’t smoke much but I was dedicated!  I don’t hardly anymore, massive doses of wellbutrin and lots of coffee help, I tapered off.  Anyway husband  chews those little nasty packets once a day OUTSIDE.  But we are old and we quit, he quit fathers day and I’m thinking he was going to be GRUMPY and he’s been pretty good.  A bit self righteous and the dog stinks more he says in other words his terribly sensitive sense of smell is more sensitive, oh goody.  I’ll just use lysol more?

Oh good, heavy rain while in the camper the weatherman is saying for the weekend with the laid off husband who is getting antsy.    I told husband he could put spreadsheets of finances on his computer?  I didn’t even get a dirty look for that one.  It was more like I didn’t exist?

Google Analytics and Wordpress and CSS

Posted in Computer on September 8th, 2009 by TC – Be the first to comment

HTML is NOT my first or second language, I did use it to turn some ebay pages brown to go with my theme for my ad in the good old days when you could get by with such things on ebay.  Now you would probably be banned for life from ebay for playing with their page html.

Everything below has to do with wordpress blogs,  I forgot to mention that and it makes it a little confusing like I’m drunk but all I’ve had is two helpings of frozen desert?

OK, to get this over with if you are sort of sure you know what css are or is and how it’s different than html or know how to edit it more power to you.  I downloaded sort of a fancy (so fancy it’s plain) theme on my other blog.  I FINALLY got adsense to show up and then I had to watch movies with my husband who had another day of vacation before my marriage disintegrated before my eyes.  Then I tackled google analytics  and no it’s not on this blog yet.  It is on the other blog

Anyway if you are trying to install some code and can’t find your WYSIWYG editor, which is the  greatest and most dangerous invention since the microwave, if you want to install said code like google analytics or any other code that has to go where it can be read but not seen just get the plugin called header and footer.  Great invention.  I’m sure there’s a better way to do it which I think I just realized but ……..

Right now I’m so tired of source code and trying to keep 10 windows open on an old laptop I think I will quit for the night.

Later:

I’m still enough of a geek to figure out I probably don’t need adsense channels yet since I only have the ads on one private blog right now.  But while researching that I found a book called wickedly cool shell scripts,  with me it probably should be entitled  how to screw up your linux os 101.

Google Facts

Posted in Computer on September 6th, 2009 by TC – 5 Comments

I was reading a book on SEO today (The Truth About Search Engine Optimization, I know it’s too racy a subject to discuss here, can you say geek or nerd?) and it said Google Page Rank was named after a guy named Larry Page and not because it’s a page ranking? Wiki link

HERE.

I just thought more people should know this?
